I suppose it could be said to be a mix of the usual dungeon-based exploration with a novel (and primitive) form of social simulation, such that one might consider it a prototype for later and more refined games like Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3. Ultima: Quest of the Avatar is perhaps one of the earliest examples of an RPG attempting some blatant genre-bending to differentiate itself.
